Rebuilding, Finding Safety and Freedom
Today is the sixth anniversary of the four-sentence discard speech that came out of nowhere, shattering a world I had spent eleven years building. I was left stranded in a foreign country, facing financial uncertainty and later economic devastation, legal abuse, and the terrifying reality of having my human dignity stripped away overnight when the person in control terminated the utilities without any warning what so ever.
At my lowest point, my bank accounts held a grand total of €1.85 and €0.92. If you are reading this while counting cents to feed your pets or keep a roof over your head, hear this loud and clear: your bank balance is not a measure of your worth or your effort. It is simply proof of a system that frequently fails to recognise litigation and economic abuse post-separation.
The Hidden Reality of Post-Separation Economic Abuse
Economic abuse does not always end when a relationship does. In fact, post-separation abuse often escalates through legal channels, withheld assets, and manufactured financial crises designed to starve you out.
For five years, I lived in high-alert survival mode. I weeded gardens to sheer exhaustion, fought relentless legal battles, and dodged systemic traps meant to break my spirit. Survival under these conditions is not just “getting by” it is an unbelievable, heroic feat of raw human endurance.
- Recognise the Tactic: Depriving you of resources or forcing you into endless legal defence is a calculated attempt to break your resolve.
- Shift the Narrative: You did not fail. You were targeted by a system and an individual intent on stripping away your independence.
- Acknowledge Your Power: Navigating this level of stress proves an extraordinary capacity for resilience.
For the last few years I have volunteered with SEA Surviving Economic Abuse. Economic abuse is a legally recognised form of domestic abuse. You can read more here.
My situation has gone on for just over half a decade, stuck in civil and criminal litigation, with an ex-romantic partner who would not “negotiate” and who entered into a mediation attempt that I paid for while at the same time instructing a Barcelona solicitor to start civil action in the Spanish courts to leave me homeless and with no financial settlement dispite a signed out-of-court agreement.
The attempted evictions did not happen.
The criminal allegations against me were eventually dismissed.
The reality was post-separation litigation abuse and economic abuse, somethiing the justice system did not recognise or prosecute.
Because of my lived expereince I‘m passionate about helping other women who are in similiar situations, to get better outcomes.
From Running on Empty to Owning the Ground Beneath Your Feet
Defiance begins when you refuse to crumple. While actively being hunted and financially squeezed, I began planting seeds for my future. I published two books detailing the truth of post-separation abuse, launched a podcast, and built online platforms from scratch.
Safety did not happen by luck; it was a step by step process, with mistakes and failures along the way, through taking relentless action. By taking control of the administrative and physical steps required, being resourceful to secure my freedom, the turning point finally became real:
- Securing Physical Safety: Relocating to a new region and establishing an official rental agreement.
- Establishing Legal Status: Registering locally, completing residency requirements, and securing my 10-year residency card (TIE).
- Building Independent Infrastructure: Founding Truth After Abuse to ensure my voice, and the voices of other survivors, could never be silenced again.
When you transition out of survival mode, the energy previously spent on sheer terror is unlocked. Imagine what you can grow when you are no longer running on zero fuel.
Looking Out for the Red Flags:
The Cost of “Too Good to Be True”
My story began with a familiar narrative: meeting a charming, caring, and generous individual who seemed like the ideal partner. The reality of coercive control often hides behind lavish generosity and grand promises in the early stages.
The Red Flag Checklist: Protecting your future self means recognising subtle warning signs and red flags early on:
- The Fast-Track Romance: Rapid declarations of commitment combined with overwhelming charm.
- Vague Historical Details: A sketchy or overly guarded past that is glossed over with excuses. The “crazy ex” narrative to fool you.
- Financial Secrecy: Gradual isolation from your own financial decision-making or providing a monthly allowance with conditions. Future faking and selling you a dream of a shared life together.
- Property Assest Division: At the point of the “discard” the property asset is HIS and HIS alone and you end up financially devastated, this is why I wrote “After The Discard – No Divorce Required.” because unmarried partners are not covered by the Family Laws like married couples.
The legal system may not always deliver moral justice, but thriving despite the odds is the ultimate defiance. Today, the tank is full, the food cupboards are stocked, and the ground underfoot is secure.
